South Allegheny’s quest for its first WPIAL championship in program history came to an end Monday night.

The third-seeded Gladiators held No. 2 North Catholic to a season-low point total, but struggled on the offensive end of the floor in a 51-40 WPIAL Class 3A semifinal loss at North Hills.

“Our plan and execution on the defensive end was as good as it could have been,” South Allegheny head coach Tony DiCenzo said. “They average almost 80 points per game, so we knew we needed to keep this game in the 50s or 60s to have a chance. At the end of the day, we just didn’t make enough plays on offense. It was probably one of our worst efforts offensively, but that’s a credit to them.”

North Catholic (23-2), which will play top-seeded Lincoln Park for the Class 3A title 9 p.m. Thursday at the University of Pittsburgh’s Petersen Events Center, held a slim 18-17 lead at halftime before pulling away in the third quarter.
