A more than 100-year-old brick sewer line on the ArcelorMittal Mill property in Monessen collapsed this week and opened a sinkhole 35 feet deep and 60 feet long.
The site of the collapse is secure from the public. The mill closed a road inside the plant near the sinkhole until repairs can be made.
Monessen Mayor Matt Shorraw said the massive sinkhole is located about 40 to 60 feet from the Monongahela River.
Shorraw said no residents are in danger from the collapse.
“The impacted pipe is a 5-foot-by-8-foot brick tunnel with a vault that reduces the pipe size as it exits to the river,” Shorraw said.
