This will be a big weekend for local high school wrestlers, as 14 of them will compete in the PIAA Class 2A Southwest Regional aiming to advance to the state championships in Hershey in two weeks.
Wrestlers at four local 3A schools will be looking to win a section championship and qualify for the WPIAL tournament.
Here is a closer look at the Southwest Regional:
Frazier’s Thayne Lawrence and Elizabeth Forward’s Ryan Michaels will try to repeat as regional champions after dominating their brackets to win WPIAL titles. Both are the top seeds in their 16-man bracket at the event held at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Lawrence (17-0), a Lehigh recruit, is a four-time WPIAL and section champ and is aiming to earn his third state championship. He will begin action at 160 pounds on Friday against Bald Eagle sophomore Noah Foltz (22-12).
