After a dominating start, the Monessen girls basketball team saw its opening round game in the WPIAL Class A playoffs slip away in a 34-30 defeat by Aquinas Tuesday evening.
“I’m shocked, myself. In 33 years of coaching, I’ve never been involved in a game like this one,” said Monessen head coach Janine Vertacnik.
The Greyhounds didn’t allow a point in the first quarter, using the first eight minutes to grab a 13-0 advantage. Sophomore Kendelle Weston put up seven points in the opening frame.
It took more than 11 minutes for Aquinas to score its first point of the game. The Crusaders put their first field goal in with 1:17 to play in the second before Weston hit another field goal for her 10th point of the game, closing the half with Monessen up 17-3.
