The Charleroi girls basketball team has oftentimes excelled in competitive, close games this season.
The Cougars’ WPIAL Class 3A first-round matchup against East Allegheny Wednesday night was not one of those games.
The Wildcats jumped out early on the Cougars, scoring 19 points in the first quarter en route to a 51-24 victory at Peters Township High School.
East Allegheny’s size and athleticism gave Charleroi fits from the tip. The Cougars (14-8) were outrebounded, 40-21, and made only 8 of 41 field goals in their most lopsided loss of the year.
The win allows EA (13-10) to advance to the 3A quarterfinals against second-seeded Mohawk.
