There was no doubting the fact that early on in its Class 4A first-round playoff matchup against Derry, the Belle Vernon Area boys basketball team looked like a team coming off a 13-day layoff.
But once they got going, the Leopards left little doubt who the better team was Wednesday.
BVA outscored the Trojans, 36-15, over the middle quarters and rolled to a 65-44 win to advance to Saturday’s WPIAL quarterfinals.
The Leopards found an unfortunate source of motivation early in the second quarter when senior Cam Nusser went to the floor with what appeared to be a serious left ankle injury.
“We decided we needed to have the will and play for Cam,” sophomore guard Devin Whitlock said. “We wanted to bring it home for him and we picked it up on both ends of the floor.”
Whitlock finished with a team-high 21 points and Mitch Pohlot added 15 as the Leopards received contributions from everyone on the floor.
