The Belle Vernon Area girls basketball team will see their short layoff come to an end as they begin WPIAL Class 4A playoff action tonight.

The No. 10-seeded Leopards (16-6) will head to North Hills for a date with No. 7 Freeport at 6:30 p.m.

“We’ve had some really good practices leading up to the game and I thought we did really well in our scrimmage Thursday,” BVA head coach Ronnie Drennen said. “We approached it like we were playing the Freeport game, implementing what we wanted to do (tonight). I think we got a lot out of it.”

The Yellowjackets (16-6) will be a tough test for Drennen’s Leopards.

“I don’t think I’ve seen a team with six guards that can dribble, drive and shoot the way they do,” Drennen said. “They’re very good, very disciplined. They move the ball well and push the ball ahead quicker than we’ve seen any team all year and they can shoot the ball really well.”
