Metal roses ‘bloom’ in Mike Beaver’s workshop

Roses aren’t exactly a unique Valentine’s Day gift, unless you’re looking for more of a sculptural bloom, in which case a Monongahela artist has just the thing.

Mike Beaver has been a welder by trade for about three years and after he started to get really good at controlling his work, he began to think more creatively.

Beaver has always had an artistic streak. Earlier in his life that outlet was fulfilled by playing drums in a band, but these days he’s looking for something that’s driven more by his own ideas and he’s finding a niche in metal sculpture.

It started a little more than a year ago when he happened upon a YouTube video that showed an artist using welding to make a rose out of metal. Beaver decided to give it a try.
