Several students in Ross Farmer’s history classes at Belle Vernon Area Middle School will compete in the Pittsburgh leg of the National History Day next month.
With the theme of “Breaking Barriers” in mind, the eighth-grade students have researched events, figures and time periods that they say made an impact on local and American history.
On competition day, hundreds of students who hail from Allegheny, Washington, Greene, Fayette, Westmoreland and Somerset counties will bring their work to the Senator John Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh, where they have short interviews with a team of judges to talk about their work.
National History Day is a nonprofit educational organization based in College Park, Md., that offers year-long academic programs that engage more than half a million middle and high school students around the world annually in conducting original research on historical topics.
National History Day draws upon a unique historical theme each year and encourages students to research history in an exciting and creative way, according to the Heinz History Center. Either individually or in groups, students create exhibits, produce documentaries, write papers, design websites or stage performances.
