Joey Caruso finished with a game-high 21 points in his final home game in a Charleroi uniform as the Cougars won a battle between a pair of section co-champions, earning a 66-57 non-section win over Greensburg Central Catholic Monday night.
Zach Usher also had a big night with 17 points, while Will Wagner added 14 for the Cougars (16-6). The hosts started fast and played much better than they did in their previous game at McGuffey.
“That was something that we needed to do, we used a whole new strategy tonight coming out of the locker room,” said Charleroi head coach Bill Wiltz. “Our kids were really tight against McGuffey. It was a big game and they felt the pressure. We tried to take the pressure off and it worked.”
The Cougars made 8 of 13 from the field in the opening eight minutes, including 3 for 5 showing from downtown. Wagner, Caruso and Alex Conrad hit those first quarter threes and helped build a 21-6 advantage. Charleroi’s defense also made it tough on GCC (16-6), holding the Centurions to only one field goal, a three by Dylan Sebak, in the first.
