Three state lawmakers, two of whom are from the Mon Valley, were recognized during the National Rifle Association’s 2020 Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg last week.

The honors were in recognition of their work on Senate Bill 147, also known as the Sunday Hunting Bill, which was signed into law by Gov. Tom Wolf in November.

Its co-prime sponsors, Sens. Jim Brewster, D-McKeesport, and Dan Laughlin, R-Erie, were given the inaugural Defender of Hunting Award by the NRA and Red Arrow TV. The award was also presented to state Rep. Bill Kortz, D-Dravosburg, who will be retiring in November and is the Democratic chair of the state House Game and Fisheries Committee, for advocating for the Sunday Hunting Bill’s passage into law and supporting an amendment that protects farm land owners.

“Thanks to the NRA  for honoring me, Sen. Dan Laughlin and Rep. Bill Kortz with the first ever Defender of Hunting Award this week,” Brewster said, adding that he is “always happy to support our sportsmen and  women.”
