Belle Vernon Area head coach Joe Salvino admitted he was worried about Tuesday’s game against visiting Elizabeth Forward.
The Leopards were able to overcome persistent foul trouble and used their pressure defense in the second and third quarter to claim a 74-64 win over the Warriors.
Elizabeth Forward came in as one of the hottest teams in the section, winning four straight before a loss to Class 6A Norwin and a two-point overtime defeat against section champion Uniontown.
“I was worried about this one,” Salvino said. “EF has been playing really well and had big wins over Ringgold and South Park. They almost beat Uniontown and we know they can really shoot the ball.
“I actually thought we did OK, especially with our defense in the third quarter. We forced them to turn the ball over and we scored off those. We’re doing our job when we’re doing that.”
