Scotties too much for visiting Leopards

Judging by the scoreboard, the Southmoreland girls basketball team coasted to an easy victory over visiting Belle Vernon in Section 3(4A) Monday.
In truth, it wasn’t so easy, as the Leopards tested the Scotties in the early going before Southmoreland was able to build a lead late in the game and pick up the 60-36 win.
“We fought, but you’ve got to give credit to Southmoreland. I thought everything they did tonight was done really well,” Belle Vernon coach Ron Drenner said. “They played hard, and they competed their butts off. That’s what I tell these girls, always fight to the end. And we do. For our size and talent, we are competitive. As a coach, that’s all I could ask for.”
It doesn’t get much more competitive than the hard-fought first quarter, which saw Belle Vernon (15-6, 8-5) go up 10-4 before Delaynie Morvosh and Erika Sherbondy each hit a 3-pointer to tie it up. Charity Henderson scored off a turnover, and though Rachel Wobrak answered, Carlie Collins went to the hoop for a 14-12 Southmoreland lead.
The Scotties (20-0, 13-0) got a trey from Collins in second quarter, but it was really their defense on display, as they limited the Leopards to just nine points, grabbing a 27-21 advantage at the half.
