Monessen appointee intends to keep Sewage Authority seat

An attempt to unseat a board member of the Mon Valley Sewage Authority Board has been paused due to unanswered questions of legality.

Brooke Farmer said she received a letter in the mail from Monessen City Administrator John Harhai after the Jan. 6 council meeting notifying her that she would no longer be serving on the board she had just been appointed to.

“I thought they would call me or something,” Farmer said. “There was no communication at all. I was just hearing everything. Why am I being removed after I did my swear in and everything?”

Farmer was appointed by Monessen council to temporarily replace former board member George Shusta on Nov. 8, then council appointed her as a member to fill a long-term position at the Dec. 27 council meeting. Farmer’s initial appointment came after weeks of turmoil related to Shusta’s resignation, which took several weeks to receive official approval.
