Behind a record-breaking performance by Cam Nusser, Belle Vernon Area made it a clean sweep of its rivals across the river this season.
Nusser drained nine 3-pointers and scored a game-high 37 points to lead the Leopards to an 80-71 win over Ringgold in a Section 3-4A contest Friday. BVA won all three meetings with the Rams this season.
Nusser broke Tom Emelo’s record of eight treys in a game set in the 1988-89 season.
“I was feelin’ it a little bit,” Nusser said with a slight laugh. “It feels really good, I just found out about the school record, that’s really cool. It’s cool to get it in this game, against these guys because it is such a rivalry, but really, I just try to go out and do it every game.”
Nusser was feeling it from the very start, burying five threes in the first quarter as the Leopards raced out to an 18-4 lead after starting with a 10-0 run.
“That’s definitely one of the best shooting performances I’ve ever seen,” BVA head coach Joe Salvino said. “I’ve been around a while, that one’s right up there.
“Most importantly, though, it got us off to a great start. Any time you jump out on a team like that is a good thing. Cam shooting that way made them come out of the zone and play us man. That plays into our favor and what we want to do.”
