Refusal of TAN note for Monessen explained

Financial discrepancies led to Monessen being denied a tax anticipation note earlier this month, City Administrator John Harhai explained at Wednesday’s council meeting.

In his report to council, Harhai said there were differences between reported totals from the state Department of Community and Economic Development and forensic audit results.

Harhai said that’s why the city was denied its TAN note –– something that Councilman Anthony Orzechowski, who was present for the TAN meeting, said came as a surprise to him.

“Why did they not tell council that? You are not the whole speaking platform for council,” Orzechowski said.

Harhai, who said his city email is still not up and running, replied that he just received a phone call Wednesday and didn’t have time to inform council. Orzechowski again asked why he wasn’t informed.

“You?” Harhai responded. “Don’t harass me. I just found out.”
