It’s Catholic Schools Week, with a variety of activities planned at Madonna Catholic Regional School, but principal Kathy Miller said there is always a lot going on at the school.

“We have such great things happening and it’s hard to get recognition because we’re so small,” Miller said. “I think if people realized what we have and what we offer, they would be wowed.”

The school has 116 students in preschool through eighth grade.

“This week is dedicated to learning, serving, leading and succeeding,” Miller said.

To celebrate Catholic Schools Week, a science challenge was held Monday that included designing catapults to fling shaving cream pies at photos of the principal. Students then headed outside for an afternoon of tubing at Seven Springs.

Tuesday was a day of service that included making valentines and visiting senior citizens, homebound residents and the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer. Miller said all the nuns are retired teachers, and the students got a perspective on education over the years.

“There was one nun there that is 97 years old, 97 and 3⁄4 she said, Sister James,” Miller said. “She said she taught math by having her students follow the stock market. She said she still follows it a bit.”
