Two of the top teams in WPIAL Class 2A girls basketball gave an Ellis School gymnasium full of fans a preview of what lies ahead in the postseason.
A hard-fought back-and-forth affair between Serra Catholic and the host Tigers turned in favor of the Eagles, who closed out the fourth quarter strong for a 60-55 victory over The Ellis School Thursday night.
With the win, Serra Catholic (14-2, 10-1) claims at least a share of the section title and can clinch it outright with a win over Jeannette (2-8, 4-15) in the Eagles’ final section game at home on Feb. 6.
The Ellis School (13-5, 7-2) started hot from the perimeter, knocking down four of its six 3-pointers in the first quarter. The Tigers closed the first on an 8-0 run to take an 18-13 lead.
The Eagles clawed their way even in the second quarter. Nicole Pawlowski knocked down a three and a field goal to tie the game at 22-22.
