Citizens have questions for Monessen officials

A coalition of concerned Monessen citizens put their heads together Monday night to organize efforts against the mayor and members of council.

Led by select members of the Redevelopment Authority Board, the meeting detailed a clear goal, and residents went home with a sheet of paper detailing the questions the group intends to raise at Wednesday’s council meeting.

Ten residents showed up to discuss the plan for Wednesday. Sue Thwaite, captain of the Salvation Army Mon Valley Citadel, announced there will be a Right to Know Act/Sunshine Law information session Feb. 6 at the Salvation Army with George Spiess, who serves as the chief of outreach and training at the Office of Open Records. A time has not been set for the educational training.

Councilwoman Lois Thomas was present Monday as an observer at the meeting. Thomas serves as council’s liaison to the Redevelopment Authority Board and attended last week’s meeting when City Administrator John Harhai and Councilman Gil Coles took the board by surprise by showing up. They were later joined by three Monessen police officers, raising concerns about whether a police presence was necessary at a normally peaceful meeting.
