BVA hears new nepotism policy

The Belle Vernon Area School Board had the first reading of a nepotism policy Monday that would open the door for the relatives of supervisory personnel to apply for jobs.

The current policy prohibits applications from the relatives of school board members, commissioned officers of the district, such as the superintendent, and supervisory and similar personnel. The proposed policy, which could be acted upon at the February meeting, would eliminate the restriction in that third category as long as the applicant would not fall under the relative’s supervision.

The first reading of the proposed policy passed on a 6-2 vote, with Director Robert Harhai abstaining, noting that he has two relatives who work in the district who were hired under a previous nepotism policy.

Directors Michelle Callaway-Rodriguez and Justin Kosanko voted against the new policy, while directors Kathleen Forte, Dan Kovatch, Stacey Livengood, Joel Whiteko,  Dan Engstrom and Joe Grata voted in favor of it.
