State Rep. Bill Kortz, a Democrat who represents Pennsylvania’s 38th Legislative District, announced Tuesday that he will retire at the end of November.
Kortz, 66, of Dravosburg, represents the municipalities of Dravosburg, Glassport, Port Vue, Liberty, Pleasant Hills, South Park, Baldwin and Whitehall. His district also includes the West Mifflin, McKeesport Area, South Allegheny, South Park, Thomas Jefferson and Baldwin-Whitehall school districts.
In a prepared statement and in a letter posted on his Facebook page, Kortz said he will retire at the end of the current legislative session, which ends Nov. 30.
“Suffice it to say, this was not an easy decision to make, as I truly enjoy my work and helping each one of you and honoring your achievements,” Kortz wrote. “It’s now time for me to take care of my health and provide an opportunity for future leaders to step forward.”
He did not provide further details about his health.
Kortz will finish out this year’s legislative session, and his successor will be chosen during this year’s regular election cycle. A special election will not be held.
