McKeesport watched a large lead methodically shrink Friday night.

Through it all, though, the Tigers found a way to prevail, fending off the Mustangs’ relentless comeback attempt to capture an 81-77 victory in a key Section 1-5A showdown inside Neenie Campbell Gymnasium.

With the victory, the Tigers (8-7, 5-2) take sole possession of second place.

“We were ready for them to make a comeback, we know they’re a good team,” McKeesport head coach Kevin Kovach said. “I didn’t expect it to get that close, but in the end we handled it. We took their best shot, we made our shots and did enough to win a huge game in the section and a huge game for us.”
