The Allegheny County Health Department has issued a new round of fines against U.S. Steel that will benefit the communities considered to be most impacted by air pollution control violations at Clairton Coke Works.

The fines are a result of air pollution control violations and permit violations that occurred at the Mon Valley Works’ Clairton branch during the second and third quarters of 2019.

Public Health Information Officer Ryan Scarpino said ACHD has issued $743,625 in stipulated penalties. Ninety percent of penalties, which equals $669,262.50, will be paid to the Community Benefit Trust, while the remaining 10%, or $74,362.50, go toward the county’s Clean Air Fund.

The Community Benefit Trust was established as part of a June settlement between U.S. Steel and ACHD. It benefits communities impacted by air pollution, which include Clairton, Glassport, Liberty, Lincoln and Port Vue. Other communities could be added in the future, according to court records.
