The Cal U men’s basketball team took a 40-minute drive up I-70 and used another 40-minute drive to roll past Seton Hill from start to finish on Wednesday night in Salvatti Gymnasium at the McKenna Center.
Vulcans freshman Luke House led all scorers with 27 points, going 11 of 13 from the floor and 5 of 6 from 3-point range to push Cal U to an 88-74 win over the Griffins.
As a team, Cal U shot nearly 62% from the floor in the first half, with a modest second-half point total bringing that number down to earth, finishing the game with a 52.6 field goal percentage, shooting 55% from three (11-20).
A highlight for Seton Hill fans came in the form of recent Serra Catholic graduate Jimmy Moon, excelling in his first season with the Griffs. Moon led Seton Hill with 16 points and 10 rebounds in 33 minutes of play, leading his teammates in each of those categories.
Moon shot 6 of 11 from the floor, hit a 3-pointer, picked up two assists and racked up a balanced effort on the boards with five offensive and five defensive rebounds.
The Vulcans allowed the first basket of the game to go down 2-0 to Seton Hill, before quickly tying it up, and taking the lead. The Griffins would never get within reach.
Cal U dominated in the first half, with its lights out shooting giving them a 56-32 lead at the half. Junior Brent Pegram and House were a one-two punch for the Vulcans in the first half, scoring 15 and 14 points, respectively.
“I thought we played really well in the first half. I loved our ball movement, had a lot of field goals assisted, we took great shots and we shot it well, which always helps,” said Cal U coach Danny Sancomb.
Seton Hill outscored the Vulcans 42-32 in the second half but could climb no closer than the 14-point deficit at the end of the game.
“In the second half, we have to stay a little more focused. We’re young and we’ve gotta play for 40 minutes. I thought we put our guard down in the last few minutes of the game,” said the second year coach Sancomb.
“I love how hard our guys compete and that’s what I’m all about. I want our guys to play hard and complete and play smart.”
