A 22-year-old man was struck and killed by a train in Charleroi Wednesday morning, according to the Washington County Coroner’s Office.
Anthony Lee Meyer, 22, of Charleroi was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner at 5:08 a.m.
Police, fire and ambulance personnel were called to the area of Third Street and Railroad Way for a report of a resident who had been struck by a train around 3:50 a.m.
The Charleroi Volunteer Fire Department rescue squad, Charleroi Regional Police and Mon Valley Emergency Medical Services responded and found an unresponsive man at the scene.
The cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy by the coroner’s office.
Rachel McDonnell Bradshaw, manager of media relations for Norfolk-Southern, said the train involved in the incident was traveling from Graysville, Pa., to Baltimore, Md., when the incident occurred around 3:50 a.m.
“At Norfolk Southern, the safety of our employees and the communities we serve is our number one priority,” Bradshaw said.
“Norfolk Southern reminds the public that it is extremely dangerous, and also trespassing, to walk on or within the right-of-way of railroad tracks.
“People should cross tracks only at designated crossings and use extreme caution at all times.”
Norfolk Southern personnel assisted local law enforcement in investigating the incident.
