Rachel Wobrak finished with a double-double, setting career highs in points and rebounds to push the Belle Vernon Area girls basketball team into a potential playoff position at the midway point of section play Monday.
Wobrak scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Leopards to a 61-49 win on the road at Elizabeth Forward in a critical Section 3-4A contest.
“I think the players knew this was a big game for them. They knew there was more on the line and they had to go out there and compete,” BVA coach Ronnie Drennen said. “We approach every game the same, but they knew there was an advantage for a playoff spot on the line.”
Despite committing nine turnovers in the earlygoing, thanks to a three-point play from Wobrak, the Leopards (8-4, 4-3) led 11-10 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Warriors snatched a 19-16 lead on a 6-0 run behind baskets by Joslyn Dawson, Brooke Markland and Anna Resnik.
The Leopards recaptured the lead with a 5-0 run to make it 21-19, kicking off a series of six straight lead changes.
Wobrak scored the final four points of the first half, though, to give her team a 29-27 lead at the break.
