In a battle for second place in Section 2-A, defense ended up being the deciding factor in a showdown between Monessen and West Greene.
Monessen forced the Pioneers into committing 22 turnovers with a combination of press, trapping and controlled chaos in a 54-32 victory Friday night.
Offensively, the Greyhounds (4-8, 4-1) started slow but got the motor going in the second half behind 16 points from Marquell Smith, 15 from Dylan Bradshaw and 12 from Dawayne Howell.
Monessen head coach Dan Bosnic was happy with the defensive effort, but makes note of the offensive woes his team has had at times this season.
“We’ve had a lot of halves like that throughout the season where we just struggle to score around the hoop,” said Bosnic. “In the second half we were able to make more shots, but overall, our defense and our activity created some opportunities for us.”
