Seconds before Serra Catholic took the court for Friday night’s Section 2-2A showdown with Brentwood, head coach Justin Walther uttered the words, “Seize the moment,” during a huddle with his players.
The message was loud and clear as the Eagles moved into sole possession of first place, knocking off previously unbeaten Brentwood, 62-52, inside a packed Serra Catholic gymnasium.
“At the beginning of the year, I thought we weren’t getting any press and it was all Cal, Jeannette and Brentwood. I’m just sitting there thinking we’ll just fly under the radar,” Walther said. “We have guys that can play and we have young guys who I said, if they were ready to go, we could be a good team with. Now, we’re sitting in first place by ourselves.”
The lone returning starter from last year’s team, Jayden Bristol played like a seasoned veteran, leading the way for the young Eagles (7-5, 5-0) as the only player to finish in double figures.
Bristol scored a career-high 34 points, with 25 in the second half. He hit five shots from beyond the arc.
“We just had a good team win. I don’t really care about the points,” Bristol said. “I’m just happy we got the W.”
