With 3:20 left in Monday’s game, Mia Weber hit a layup to give South Fayette a 43-42 advantage, its first lead of the night over Thomas Jefferson.
With the pressure mounting and momentum clearly in the Lions’ favor, it could’ve been easy for the Jagaurs to crumble.
Instead, they were reinvigorated.
After Alyssa DeAngelo hit a layup to put her team back ahead, the Jaguars used a lockdown defense and held South Fayette scoreless the rest of the way in a 52-43 Section 1-5A victory.
For a team that so often wins its games in a blowout, it was reassuring for the Jaguars to see that they could effectively take a punch and swing back emphatically.
“If anything, I thought the pressure made us stronger and it made us play together more,” said Thomas Jefferson coach Lisa Fairman said.
“When they took the lead, I thought we stayed composed, and that shows growth in our team. We stayed composed, we were patient on offense and got what we wanted and when we took the lead, absolutely, our defense ended up winning the game for us.”
