Donora council changes may bring cooperation

Donora council will look — and potentially sound — a little different starting tonight.

Edward “Sonny” Lawson, Joseph Greco and Donnie Pavelko will be sworn in as councilmen when the borough’s reorganization meeting begins at  6 p.m.

They join council members Cindy Brice, Mike McDowell, Ed Parquette, President Jane Ackerman and Mayor Jim McDonough.

The new councilmen replace outgoing members John Conger, Dennis Gutierrez and Gib Szakal.

It’s been a long, contentious road over the past two years since Ackerman, Brice, Parquette, McDowell and McDonough were elected.

“I’m hoping for patience, civility, honor and dignity,” Pavelko said. “I’m looking forward to it, to moving the wheel forward and getting the wheel back on track.”

Brice said she is hoping for the best, but she’s concerned there will be some baggage that will carry over.

“I think there will be hurt feelings and misconceptions, and I really would hope that we’re all looking out for Donora,” said Brice. “I hope everything turns out OK.”
