Rams fall to first-place Scotties

The Southmoreland girls basketball team didn’t earn a lot of style points during Thursday’s Section 3-4A home game against Ringgold.

But despite the Scotties not being on top of their game, they were still able to stay perfect on the season, improving to 10-0 with a 48-26 victory over the Rams.

“We got the W,” Southmoreland coach Brian Pritts said. “We definitely weren’t at our best. We just weren’t doing a lot of the little things that we have been doing. I don’t know if it was the holiday break and just coming back, or what. Hopefully that’s all it was. It was a battle and Ringgold made it tough on us.”

The Scotties (10-0, 4-0) never trailed in the game, but they never really got a lot of breathing room, at least until late in the third quarter.

Southmoreland was able to grab a six-point lead in the first quarter when Olivia Cernuto hit a 3-pointer to make it 9-3. But Southmoreland could never pull away due to a combination of some sloppy play — the Scotties had 10 turnovers in the first half — and a scrappy effort by the Rams.
