History was made Monday night inside the hallowed halls of Neenie Campbell Memorial Gymnasium in McKeesport.
In an otherwise nondescript, nonsection girls basketball game between the Tigers and Uniontown Red Raiders, two players hit career milestones and one set a single-game scoring mark.
McKeesport senior Jhayla Bray eclipsed 1,000 points for her career and scored a school record 42 points as McKeesport beat Uniontown, 87-36.
Uniontown’s Mya Murray also hit the 1,000-point plateau in the game thanks to her 22-point effort.
“It’s a great tribute to two girls,” said McKeesport head coach Eric Smith. “I didn’t know much about Murray, but I learned a lot in the last couple of days. Then, I learn that she’s probably a better student and person than she is a basketball player and she’s a pretty darn good basketball player.”
“Bray was just a force in their backcourt,” Uniontown head coach Penny Kezmarsky said. “She was eating our long passes; she was all over the ball tonight and it didn’t help matters either. We let her score 42 points, that’s just unacceptable for our defense. She was a force, but we’ve got to figure out how to stop girls like that.”
