Students at Thomas Jefferson High School are making an effort to close the generation gap.

During the school’s first Senior Appreciation Brunch Wednesday, students from Lauren Kaszonyi’s public relations class hosted about 80 senior community members from Pleasant Hills, Jefferson Hills and West Elizabeth.

The brunch, part of the school’s Senior Outreach Program, is designed to bring together the community and provide benefits and resources to senior citizens.

If the number of seniors at the brunch is any indication, the program has become a resounding success. School officials and students said they originally expected about 50 seniors to attend.

“We didn’t know what was going to happen,” Thomas Jefferson High School senior Alyssa Volomino said while taking a break from greeting seniors. “A lot of people know each other, and as a teenager I had no idea seniors were this involved and connected. This just shows how connected everyone is here.”
