Monessen captured its first Section 2-A win of the young season by rolling past Geibel Catholic, 77-19, on Monday night.

Kendelle Weston poured in a career-high 29 points, scoring 19 in the first half, while Qitarah Hardison and Zykavia Hairston added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Greyhounds (4-2, 1-1).

Monessen head coach Janine Vertacnik has watched Weston’s love for the game grow over the last year as the sophomore played AAU, competed in a McKeesport summer league and joined the J. Budd Grebb Memorial Summer Basketball League in California along with a few of her Greyhound teammates.

“She has the heart and she wants to play. Some girls really love the game and she’s one of those girls that love the game,” Vertacnik said. “Some girls are playing on this team because it’s a sport to play and they like it, but they don’t love it. If you love the game, you’ll excel and she wants to get better and wants to score 1,000 points.”
