The state Department of Community and Economic Development has plans to flood McKeesport with more than $3 million to combat blight and promote development in the city.

During a press conference Friday at the Tube City Center, DCED Secretary Dennis Davin was joined by U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Forest Hills, state Sen. Jim Brewster, D-McKeesport, and Mayor Michael Cherepko to announce a new six-year redevelopment strategy approved for the city through the Neighborhood Assistance Program and the Neighborhood Partnership Program.

NAP and NPP are DCED-run tax credit programs designed to encourage businesses to invest in projects to improve distressed areas.

DCED is working with Duquesne Light, First Commonwealth Bank, Noble Energy and UPMC to provide $3 million to the city to fund improvements to housing, demolish and redevelop commercial properties in the downtown business district and promote tourism and recreation around the McKees Point Marina and Great Allegheny Passage trail.
