A hot start from Washington was too much for Charleroi to overcome in a 58-45 loss in the Cougars’ Section 4-3A opener Friday night.
The Prexies dominated the first quarter, building a 14-2 advantage before a 3-pointer by Zach Usher with 20 seconds left in the quarter made it 14-5 to end the first. Washington sophomore Brandon Patterson put up eight of his 10 points in the opening eight minutes to help the Prexies take control.
Fouls impacted the course of the game in a whistle-filled first half. Seven of the first 10 points in the second quarter came from the free throw line.
Washington junior Ian Bredniak hit back-to-back perimeter shots to make it 25-10 midway through the second. Bredniak led Washington in scoring with 19 points. The Prexies held a 32-16 lead at the half.
“I think frustration set in, and the more frustrated we got the more we pressed. The more we pressed, the worse we shot. The game ran away from us in the first half,” said Charleroi head coach Bill Wiltz.
