After 2019’s tax hike, Monessen residents won’t see an increase for the coming year.
During last year’s budgeting period, the decision to make the 5.68 mill increase was controversial. Acting Mayor and Councilman Anthony Orzechowski voted against the preliminary budget in its early phases, but supported it in the final vote.
The 2019 hike increased millage from 37.43 to 43.11. It brought property taxes to the maximum allowable amount and eliminated council’s ability to increase taxes for 2020, Orzechowski said during last year’s budgeting period.
“Well, I’m not pleased that we had to do a 5.6 mill tax increase, and I’m not pleased with that by any stretch of the imagination,” Orzechowski said. “I want to be clear on that. I looked at the budget, council did, and we had some decisions to make. We had to move some things around and change some things and get a balanced budget.”
