Tigers claw past Moon

With its roster depleted and the one freshman on the roster starting, McKeesport won the battle of Tigers squads on Tuesday night, handing the defending state champions a loss on opening night on their home court, 44-39.

The McKeesport roster has 26 names on it, but only 13 of those names were marked as available to play, with several players out due to injury. Deamontae Diggs and Ed Dudley did not dress for reasons undisclosed.

For the visiting Tigers, it was all about the players on the court, not the ones off it. McKeesport was able to take a good look at the depth of its bench and see what the team as a whole was made of.

Head Coach Kevin Kovach called it a “blessing in disguise.”

“Do I want Diggs here? Absolutely I do. No question. But he’s not here and we’ve got to play this tough game together like that, I think we can grow and move on from it.”
