Vera P. Vatakis, 74, of Monessen, passed away Thursday, Dec. 5, 2019 in Monongahela Valley Hospital. She was born April 12, 1945 in Chios, Greece, a daughter of the late Panagioti and Maroulio Stambolos Chaviaras. Mrs. Vatakis was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, Monessen and was an active member of the Philoptohos Society. She enjoyed cooking and baking, working the Greek festivals and visiting her beloved village of Lagada in Chios. Survivors include her daughter; Angel Vatakis; a brother and sister-in-law, Vagelis Chaviaras (Irene); two nephews, Michalis and Panagioti Chaviaras, and numerous other nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Pantelis “Pete” Vatakis; a brother; Petros Chaviaras; and a sister; Anna Apostolidou. Visitation will be held at the RHOME FUNERAL HOME INC. 1209 Grand Blvd. Monessen, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Additional viewing will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, Monessen. Services will begin at 10 a.m. with Father Constantinos (Dean) Kokanos officiating. Entombment will follow in Grandview Cemetery. A Trisagion service will be held at 7:30pm Tuesday evening in the funeral home. On line condolences are accepted at rhomefuneralhome.com.
