When is a championship game not a championship game?
When that game is played in the semifinal round of the playoffs.
Tonight, the top teams in the state in Class A will meet in a PIAA semifinal game when No. 1 Clairton (11-2) takes on No. 2 Farrell (12-2), 7 p.m., at North Allegheny.
The winner of the game won’t “officially” win the PIAA title until it beats the winner of the other semifinal game between Lackawanna Trail (10-3) and Bishop Guilfoyle (11-2).
However, on paper, there is little doubt who the best teams are in Class A: the Bears and Steelers.
They are the hottest teams in the playoffs right now as the District 10 champion Steelers carry a 12-game win streak into the contest and the WPIAL champ Bears have won 11 straight.
Clairton coach Wayne Wade doesn’t seem surprised that it’s 1 vs. 2 in the semifinals.
“We beat everybody else,” Wade said with a huge smile, “We played Laurel, we beat Laurel. We played West Greene and beat West Greene. We beat Jeannette, Cornell, Sto-Rox … they were all ranked. There really isn’t anybody else left.”
