“Pass the turkey” is a phrase that will be heard in 73 more homes in the Elizabeth Forward School District on Thanksgiving Day thanks to a holiday outreach program of the same name.
All the ingredients for a complete family dinner, from the turkey to the pumpkin pie, were handed out Monday afternoon to families who pre-registered for the Pass the Turkey program. When they arrived, they received an added surprise.
“We had some other meals that were donated and other things so the families can come in like a shopping trip and take what they need. The idea is for everything to go,” said Crista Scalfari, a guidance counselor in the district who has coordinated the program for the past four years.
In addition to a foil roasting pan filled with dinner supplies, two full bags of groceries, a 10-pound bag of potatoes and a frozen turkey, families had the option of filling a bag or a box with additional groceries with no bill attached. The extra items included breakfast cereals, crackers, snack items, cake mixes and canned goods.
