Rocker Frank Zappa may have warned us to stay away from the yellow snow in his classic song “Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow,” but Belle Vernon resident and percussionist Mark Nagy hopes people come out to see his Christmas band Yelo Sno perform at the eighth annual Peoples Gas Holiday Market in downtown Pittsburgh’s Market Square this holiday season.
Picked to be the house band this year, the group will perform from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday; 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 29 and Dec. 6 and 7:30 to 9 p.m. Dec. 14.
“They approached us and talked us into doing two shows last year,” Nagy said of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership asking Yelo Sno to play more frequently. “We were booked all the way through last year, but they moved some things around to make room for us. They went out on a limb for us.”
Influenced by holiday concerts by local artists such as Jeff Jimerson and the late B.E. Taylor, Nagy formed Yelo Sno five years ago with the idea to mix younger, high school students with more experienced musicians.
“We just started doing stuff for charity, but we started going pretty good where people wanted to pay us,” he said. “We go all the way to ‘O Holy Night’ to ‘The Grinch’ to classic rock. It’s all different.”
