With a bit of a new-look roster, the Cal U women’s basketball team picked up a statement win in the early going of the 2019-20 season Wednesday.
The Vulcans upset No. 5 Virginia Union, 82-80, behind four double-digit scorers and 11 3-pointers.
After trailing 41-40 at the half, Cal U started the third quarter with an 10-0 run and never looked back.
With the graduation of Seairra Barrett and Abbey Sporio from last year’s team, the roster has a vastly different look and the style of play has changed.
The Vulcans (3-0) shot 25 3-pointers in the contest, none bigger than one of three made by senior transfer Mo Burns.
Coming out of a time out with the Vulcans clinging to a 78-75 lead, Burns curled to the top of the circle, caught a pass and launched a deep 3-pointer from the middle.
