McKeesport was among the stops earlier this year on a “Poverty Listening Tour” conducted by state Sen. Art Haywood, D-Wyncote.
Haywood, the Democratic chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee, met with residents “to hear from people who are in poverty and want out.”
Haywood re-visited McKeesport Friday afternoon to talk with state Sen. Jim Brewster, D-McKeesport, Mayor Michael Cherepko and about a dozen other people.
Haywood provided a 66-page report that explains what he learned from his tour and gives a list of 20 recommendations to “help people get out of poverty.” The full report and the full list of recommendations can be viewed at www.senatorhaywood.com/poverty.
Haywood said it’s important to recognize that “access to adequate resources is not just about overcoming personal or individual barriers. It is important to recognize that government policies and social service support system failures hamper the ability of individuals to become self-sufficient.”
