McKeesport has decided not to handle its own trash and recycling collection services.
Council voted Wednesday to award a bid for hauling and collection of trash and recyclables to Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill Inc.’s County Hauling, which will begin providing service Jan. 1.
The city used the Enviro 21 reverse-bidding process to seek bids, and Mayor Michael Cherepko said County Hauling was the only company to submit an offer. The city will be charged $79.75 per ton for the collection services, which Cherepko said is a good deal.
“Most other garbage haulers are charging upwards of $100 per ton,” he said.
Cherepko explained at a meeting earlier this year that garbage collection is one of the city’s largest expenses, costing roughly $1.4 million annually.
