Grant revitalizes Charleroi Riverfront Park effort

A recent grant awarded to the Mon Valley Alliance Foundation is the last missing piece to complete a years-long project at the Charleroi Riverfront Park.

On Thursday, state Rep. Bud Cook, R-West Pike Run Township, announced $157,250 in grant funding from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

In April, approaching a year after bricks began to fall from Charleroi Cougar Stadium, the Mon Valley Alliance began working to secure grant funding to complete the first phase of development at the site.

Demolition of the stadium began in May 2018 using a portion of $252,000 in Local Share Account funding secured by the Alliance for the Charleroi Renaissance Project.

The first phase of that project was demolition of the stadium. That involved removing lighting, light pole bases, a wall in front of the property, chain-link fencing, goalposts, netting, scoreboard, a storage building and railings.
