Monessen City Controller Wayne Vlasic was victorious over opponent police Chief Jim Smith to land the role as the next Monessen magisterial district judge.

According to unofficial results from the Westmoreland County Election Bureau, Monessen City Controller Vlasic secured 1,231 votes on the Democratic ballot, or about 53% of the votes in Tuesday’s general election.

Smith, who appeared on the Republican ballot, received 1,062, votes, or 46% according to unofficial votes

Smith fell short on the Democratic ticket in the spring primary election, which led to Tuesday’s contested race.

Vlasic celebrated last night at St. Spyridon Hellenic Center with close to 100 family members, friends and most of all –– supporters.

During his victory speech, Vlasic made a point of laying out plans to work together with Smith to improve the city and lessen any political divides.

“I look forward to working with Jim and his whole staff,” he said. “I appreciate everybody that voted for him and supported him. That’s great. But hopefully now, we can work together, because he and I are going to have to work together.”
