New-look Vulcans ready for tipoff

With the largest roster in the Jess Strom era, the Cal U women’s basketball team will tip off the regular season Friday.

The Vulcans will travel to West Liberty Friday and Saturday for the annual Mountain East/PSAC Challenge.

In its opener, Cal U will face Charleston (W.Va.) at 7:30 p.m., followed by a meeting Saturday with the host Hilltoppers at 5:30 p.m.

Strom and her staff added a recruiting class of five freshmen this year. They have a redshirt freshman added to the four members of the sophomore class.

The Vulcans have 17 players on this year’s roster, by far the most Strom has coached in a season. There is only one junior on the squad, six seniors and a graduate transfer.

“We have six players that have freshmen eligibility. … This is definitely a team of underclassmen,” Strom said. “We tried to reload the last two classes. We wanted to reload with younger kids that are going to play together for the next two, three or four years.”
