Jacqueline R. Hoffman, 80, of Charleroi, died Thursday, Oct. 31, in her home. She was born Aug. 31, 1939, in the home of her grandmother in Hazelwood during the Great Depression. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Ruth Smith Preston. At the age of 13, Jackie began working at the Hazelwood Library and then at 15, the local movie theater, so she could save enough money to buy her first radio. For most of her life, she worked for Walden Books before they were purchased by K-Mart. She continued to work in their readers’ market and returns department until her retirement. Devoted to her family, Jackie was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints in Monongahela, where she taught early-morning seminary and belonged to their woman’s organization. Surviving are a son, Joseph M. May III of Lochbuie, Colo.; a step-daughter, Sandra Lynn (Budd) Staten of Charleroi; a sister, Linda (Bill) Pringle of Philadelphia; five grandchildren, Robert W. (fiancée Chrystal Cromey), William May, Brittany (Chris) Lubic, Jacqueline (Shawn) Milligan and Melissa (Brandon) Dilworth; and four great-grandchildren, Magnus Lubic, Ralph and Joseph Miligan and Savanah Dilworth. Preceding her in death were her husband, Donald P. Hoffman, who died May 30; a son, Michael E. May, who died Feb. 19; and a great-granddaughter, Gracelyn Nicole Aschenbrenner, who died on July 1, 2015, at the age of 5. At the family’s request, services were private.
