Not all heroes wear capes.
Every Halloween, Monessen Elementary Center students from pre-K through fifth grade receive a visit from “heroes” to help introduce them to local police, firefighters and first responders.
This year’s heroes were Monessen police Officer Jenna Haniotakis, Monessen police Chief Jim Smith, Monessen police Officer Chris Gray, Mon Valley EMS paramedic Scott Marvin, Mon Valley EMS Capt. Karen Newman, Mon Valley EMS Chief Bill Hess, Mon Valley EMS assistant chief Paul Buchko, Monessen fire department #1 firefighter Matt Leach, Monessen fire department #1 Mikayla Speck and retired Sgt. David Feehan, U.S. Marine Corps.
Students are encouraged to dress up as superheroes or other heroic characters as part of the heroes day initiative.
Students from every grade level walked the halls clad in Wonder Woman outfits and crowns, Iron Man T-shirts and Captain America-themed garb. Students passed a series of themed bulletin boards outfitted with questions like, “What will you be?” with cartoons depicting different jobs and occupations.
